Artist of the Week: Kongar-ol Ondar

This week's artist of the week is Tuvan singer Kongar-ol Ondar

I first heard Kongar-ol Ondar on the documentary "Gengis Blues" in which blind blues singer Paul Pena traveled to Mongolia. I am completely fascinated with sounds created by constricting and manuipulating the voice box. I would love one day to do two things, learn to sing like that and the second to travel to the country once known as Tuva. This show is also in remeberance in Paul Pena who died October 1, 2005.

"Kongar-ool Ondar is a master Tuvan throatsinger and a member of the Tuvan Parliament. Ondar was born in 1962 near the Khemchik River in western Tuva. Considered a living treasure by the Republic of Tuva, Ondar is granted a stipend and an apartment for the musical skills he possesses. Jovial and personable, Ondar is probably the best-known face of Хөөмей (khoomei) throat singing to Westerners, appearing often in interviews for CNN and other networks.

In the Central Asian tradition of self-fulfilling child naming, Kongar-ool literally translates to "Loud Boy".

Ondar is also known outside Tuva for inviting American blues musician Paul Pena to Tuva. Pena, who had learned throat singing before coming to Tuva, was the subject of the documentary Genghis Blues in which Ondar was also featured." - Wikipedia.com

Artist of the Week: Peppermoon

This week's artist of the week is the French pop trio, Peppermoon.
I first learned about Peppermoon a few months ago when they added me as a friend on the Culture Clash Myspace page. When I first heard Iris's voice, Benoit's guitars, and Pierre's sweet lyrics and piano... I was hooked. The set me a demo Cd which was immediately put in the Radio 1190 top 30 CDs.

This week you will hear an interview with Pierre on Culture Clash (if you miss it, it will also run Thursday August 17th at 9am and Saturday August 19th at 8am, Mountain Standard Time). Thank you for Pierre for taking the time to talk to me. :)

Artist of the Week: Mohammed Rafi

The artist of the week for this week is Bollywood superstar singer, Mohammed Rafi.

I first heard Mohammed Rafi on the soundtrack to the Bollywood cross-over film, Monsoon Wedding but did really discover more until watching the indie cult film "Ghost World" and loved the Bollywood music video that appears in the begining of the film. Mohammed Rafi has been the male vocalist in many soundtracks and often duets with female Bollywood superstar Asha Bhosle. I decided to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Mohammed Rafi's death by making him Culture Clash's artist of the week.

"Mohammed Rafi (December 24, 1924 - July 31, 1980) was arguably the greatest of Hindi/Urdu playback singers in Bollywood - along with Kishore Kumar and Mukesh. Rafi still remains popular in Indian Subcontinent and in many other parts of the world such as the UK, Kenya, and the West Indies, where people of Indian origin have settled. He continues to inspire new Bollywood playback singers like Sonu Nigam, Mohammed Aziz, Shabbir Kumar and Anwar.

Rafi sang many duets with Lata Mangeshkar, but he has also sung a large number of songs with Geeta Dutt and Lata's sister Asha Bhosle as well.

His songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawaalis to ghazals and bhajans, and from slow melancholic tunes to fast fun-filled songs.

He sung for Rajendra Kumar and Jeetendra, the tragedy heroes Dilip Kumar and Bharat Bhushan, comedian Johnny Walker, and many more. His voice personified the rebellious image of the star Shammi Kapoor and also gave expression to smaller and younger heroes like Biswajit and Joy Mukherjee. Rafi has also sung for singer-actor Kishore Kumar in a few movies like Raagini, Baaghi Shehzaada, and Shararat." - From Wikipedia.com

Artist of the Week: Cornelius

This week's artist of the week is Japanese Producer/Artist, Cornelius.

I first learned about Cornelius during the Japanese Pop For a Beutiful Life show on Radio 1190 when Jessica had a show focused completely on Pizzicato Five. This show introduced me to Japanese pop and the artist, Cornelius who helped bring Pizzicato Five into the spotlight. He really caught my attention with his remixes of Takako Minekawa and has even been imortalized in a song by Momus. In honor of Japanese Pop For a Beautiful Life's last show this past Sunday, I decided to pick Cornelius as the artist of the week.

"Japanese pop-noise savant Cornelius was born Keigo Oyamada in 1971; a self-taught guitarist inspired early on by Kiss and Black Sabbath, his musical alias was later chosen as an homage to the Planet of the Apes film series. A product of the same Shibuya-kei bubblegum scene that also gave rise to Pizzicato Five, Cornelius debuted in 1993 with the EP Holydays in the Sun, the first release from his own Trattoria label. He became a national teen idol in the wake of the release of 1994's full-length The First Question Award and a year later he issued the album 69/96, followed in 1996 by the remix LP 96/69. Released in 1997, Fantasma was his creative and commercial breakthrough, a kaleidoscopic, genre-hopping joyride through contemporary musical history that became Cornelius' first American release when it was reissued by Matador a year later. Another pair of remix collections, CM and FM, followed in 1999." - allmusic.com
