Artist of the week: Kent

This week's artist of the week is Swedish rock group, Kent.
I first learned about Kent through a discussion about Scandinavian music with my friends while we were having dinner at the posh French resturant, Le Central, in Denver. At this point in Scandinavian music I loved the group Hedningarna and most bands on the North Side label. So I tended towards folk/pop/rock and didn't know that bands like Kent exsisted. Not sure when she'd see me again, my friend gave me 'Vaspen & Ammunition' and told me I must hear it. I love it the minute the air raid siren blarred at begining of "Sundance Kid".

Several years later in college, when they were doing a test of the air raids sirens in Boulder, one of my friend turns to me and goes "there is this band I love that uses an air raid siren at the begining of one of their songs, but I don't have it". I found someone else who was a Kent fan. He gave me 'Isola' and 'Hagnesta Hill' (both the English versions) and I gave he finally got the song he had missed. Although still amazing, I was so used to Kent in Swedish that hearing them in English threw me for a loop.

The recently released some more EPs so hopefully another full length will be out soon.

"Kent is a Swedish rock band founded in Eskilstuna in 1990, with the name Coca-Cola Kids, later Jones & Giftet (Jones & the Poison), and Havsänglar (Angel sharks, lit. Sea angels). The band's logo is distinctive, using a lowercase "k" and the ITC Avant Garde Gothic Book typeface. Kent have had several big Swedish radio hits since the breakthrough single “Kräm (så nära får ingen gå) ”. As of 2005, they are probably the most popular rock band in Sweden, but are more or less unknown outside Scandinavia. They have tried an international career with English versions of the albums “Isola” and “Hagnesta Hill” with accompanying US tours for the former, but gave up after not reaching the breakthrough they had hoped for." - From Wilkipedia
